Oscar Films & Blockbusters!
Oscar films are films that are made to win oscars awards. Oscars are hard to market, this could be down to a number of reasons, out of the ordinary storylines and genres, the actors in the film and so on. Oscar films are aimed at niche audiences and even though they are called oscar films doesnt mean they have won an oscar, it is a type of film that is aimed at the oscar awards. In england an oscar film has to be released before the end of the year to qualify for the nominations. When the oscar films are released they are usualy platform released so that they are still in the cinema when the oscar nominations are announced and the oscars have been awarded.
Million Dollar Baby is an oscar film that won 4 oscars in 2005, ‘Best Achievement in Directing’ ‘Best Motion Picture of The Year’ ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role’ ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role’ it was also nominated for 3 other nominations. It was released on the 15th December 2004, a typical time for the oscars to be released (In America). This was only a limited release, the expansion to wide release was on the 21st January 2005 Million Dollar Baby would have made a lot of money in its opening weekend, but then gone town typically, and shot back up when it one its oscars. The film was released using platform release to ensure it was still in the cinemas at the time of the oscar awards.
