I am basing my movie star profile on Jim Carey, an a list movie star that appeals to different audiences, comedy as his main audience but also thriller/horrror movies.

The big movie that established Jim Carey was Ace Ventura : Pet Detective (April 1994) making $72,217,000, he played a goofy detective specializing in animals going in search of a missing dolphin mascot of a football team. It’s all a little bit silly and unlikely but that is what Jim Carey fans expect from him now after Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber, two of the most famous Carey films, Dumb and Dumber making $127,175,354 (USA).

After Dumb and Dumber Carey made many more comedys such as The Cable Guy, Liar Liar, Me, Myself & Irene and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (The Grinch) he plays many diffrent characters in these films, a lonely and disturbed cable guy, a fast track lawyer who can’t lie for 24 hours, a nice-guy cop with dissociative identity disorder and a creature intent on stealing Christmas. Even though all these characters are very distinctively different, we always expected him to be hilarious and he didn’t dissapoint. Even though Carey is known for his comedy some of these films have a different genre also such as The Cable Guy which portrays quite a dark comedy and sometimes has quite a seriousness to it but it works with the film and I think its one of his best. Also Me, Myself and Irene has a dark side to it but not a seriousness so it is sort of similar to The Cable Guy but not the seriousness to it. Liar Liar and The Grinch also have quite a seriousness but in an emotional way, Liar Liar shows the connection between father and son and The Grinch shows the relationship between everyone and Christmas. A lot of Careys films have a message to send for example Liar Liar which shows us to value our children and marriage.

In 2003 Carey played Bruce Nolan, a guy who complains about God too often is given almighty powers to teach him how difficult it is to run the world in the comedy Bruce Almighty, a huge success making a gross of $242,589,580 and is now one of Careys most well known films. He made a few more films after this then made The Number 23 in 2007 which was a big shock as it was totally out of character for Carey, he plays Walter Sparrow, a man who becomes obsessed with a novel that he believes was written about him. As his obsession increases, more and more similarities seem to arise. It is a very complex movie which contrasts with the comedies, easy to understand that e normally does. However it was a great film and has made millions.

More recently he has made two very successful movies, Yes Man (2008) and I Love you, Phillip Morris (2009) which were more in his character as comedies.

The reason we like Jim Carey so much is because there’s no one like him, and unlike a lot of actors we can tell that Carey improvises a lot of his own acting as we see his character portrayed into different films. His childish humour brings our immaturity back and for some reason it just works, there hasn’t been many Carey films that havent been a big hit and we can always trust that he will deliver a great performance, his reputation can get people into the cinema on his appearence in a film alone and to do that shows he is an incredible actor.
